proximately 10 megapixel images, which are archived as highest quality JPEG files (usually) or in TIFF or Photoshop format (images that might also be used for other purposes).
Images were edited with Photoshop 5.0 on a succession of MacIntosh computers, aiming for a maximum height of 10 inches, or a maximum width of about 12 inches, at 72 pixels per inch resolution. Stored as medium quality JPEG (level 6), they typically use about 200K for images that are not too "busy". A second smallerC
image of 5 inches maximum dimension is also stored to increase speed in displaying pages with multiple pictures. Altogether the data base has about 2500 pairs of images occupying 560 megabytes of disk space.
Locally and globally many plants and animals are under threat from man's activities. The Cyberflora project is dedicated to enhancing our appreciation of biological diversity. A major part of the proceeds from sale of CDs will go to organizations that work to preserve our natural heritage, especially to the The Nature Conservancy.
Cyberflora programs link information about plants with photographs and other graphics. They are based on Filemaker Pro database software, and as such contain m

Almost all pictures were taken expressly for this project, with only about 20 having been made from existing slides. The vast majority were taken with one setup:
Nikon N90S camera with 104 mm, f2.8 macro lens;
Manual focussing, spot exposure;
Fujichrome Provia 100 or 100F film;
Natural light.
More recently a Nikon Coolpix 990 has been used to provide 3.4 megapixel images.
Slides were scanned at 2700 dpi resolution, using a Nikon LS2000 scanner with automatic feed. This generates ap

With Dr. Arnow's generous consent her text has been built into an interactive database, and linked to a library of photographs taken expressly for this purpose.

Trying to identify plants from a book can be overwhelming for an average person. If the book has pictures it tends to be limited in scope (with your plant not in it); if it does have all the plants it probably has few or no pictures, and may be unreadable except for experts. "Cyberflora" uses the incredible power of small computers to overcome some of the limitations of the book format, and to enable novice and expert to find out about all our plants
It began with my (novice) attempt to
use a botanical text, "Flora of the Central Wasatch Front, Utah" by Lois Arnow and her colleagues at the Garrett Herbarium, University of Utah. This describes well over a thousand species of plants that occur in Salt Lake and Davis counties - an amazing number for such a small area. The attempt was overwhelming to a non-botanist, and I soon realized how well it was suited for rebuilding as a CD-rom:
Text - requires little space: the 650 page book uses about 0.5% of a CD, so supplemen
